As a representation of Sir Athfield’s vernacular architecture, the bench contains multiple diagonal bends. There are various types of pipe connectors included in the bench design, these are exposed and can easily be seen by the public, a detail often used in Athfield’s designs. These connectors act as joints which are easily replaced when needed, as to create a more effective circular economy system. The galvanized pipes create a relationship between the site and the bench, similar to that of the handrail and the steps.

The purpose of the bench is not to be a main feature of the site but only as a supplement. The site is a memorial area therefore all the attention should be directed towards the subject, Sir Ian Athfield. To support the main features, the bench absorbs different aspects of the surrounding area, allowing it to blend in; the galvanized steel pipes from the handrail, timber pieces from the surrounding trees and the pipe connectors representing a sculpture.
