The Furniture Design Construction and Technologies elective course, at Victoria University of Wellington, took an unexpected turn. We had been tasked with proposing a prototype memorial seat for Sir Ian Athfield, in collaboration with Athfield Architects Limited. Ath was a well known celebrated New Zealand Architect based in Wellington, with a career spanning over 50 years. The bench proposal was to going to be situated halfway up the hill to the Athfield House in Khandallah, Wellington as a space to rest and reflect. However, as with everyone else around the world, we were locked down at home mid-March due to COIVD-19. With no chance of getting into the workshop, we had to improvise, giving you our fully digital Furniture Exhibition: Halfway There.

Each member of this course has produced a memorial bench to commemorate the life of Sir Ian Athfield. Expect to see a range of unique designs that reflect an individual interpretation of the brief. A broad variety of media has been explored to communicate these prototypes, executed with excellent craft. A set of technical drawings; including specific details, a scale model and renders will be included in each exhibit. Please enjoy our display of third- and fourth-year student work.
