Henry Mabin

This piece of furniture is dedicated to the memory of Ian Athfield and his unique ability to push the boundaries of design without a care for others opinion. My design aims to reflect that, posing the question; what does a piece of furniture represent formally? Integrating elements of architectural and engineering design was a defining part of my process. This resulted in a hybrid piece that combines A-frame shelving with a horizontal benchtop, all made from traditional materials.

Incorporating elements of circular design has been a driver throughout my iterative processes. My final concept has minimal environmental impact whilst still ensuring longevity.

The function of this bench is to both seat multiple users while also holding tokens that people in relation to Ian Athfeild may bring in memory of him. These shelves act as treasured memory banks, physical reminders of the legacy that he paved for aspiring architects. The position on the site allows users to both admire the existing tiled concrete wall whilst having the option to look over the native bush and towards the Wellington Waterfront. It acts as a place of rest when transitioning from carpark to hilltop, providing a place of respect and remembrance.
