This piece of furniture is dedicated to Ian Athfield and pays homage to his ability to pave the way for how people now perceive architecture. My design aims to reflect some of his unique ideas and make people question the typical seat design. Incorporating elements of circular design throughout the development has been a key focus. Creating a piece of furniture that has a low impact on the environment when produced and will stand the test of time were key factors in the design process.
This design aimed to focus and reflect on the simple and successful geometry Ian Athfield used in his architecture. The initial idea was to create a bench that would mimic the elevated studio at the top of the hill. The benchtop was designed to look almost out of place, much like the unique design of the Athfiled House above it. The bench seat would ‘float’ above the base and look unsupported and unstable. When this idea became too complicated, I redesigned the bench to focus more on reflecting the geometry used in Athfields work. Using a combination of simple shapes and curves to create a more complete product.
