“A FOR” uses galvanized sheet metal to augment a frame to which a Eucalyptus timber plane intersects and forms the seating surface. The galvanized steel base is laser cut sheet metal, folded with similar angles throughout. Strong and bold organic forms are a notable feature of any Athfield design, something that was investigated throughout the design phase. The juxtaposition between the curved form of the steel combined with the structural nature of the timber help to deliver an architectural notion to the design.
“A FOR” is positioned at the edge of the landing halfway up to the Athfield home and offices. The bench is placed at the end of the concrete landing with the longest side overhanging the edge in a playful gesture to the architecture of the Athfield’s site. The seating positions on the bench offer informal pauses onsite and longer stays with the integrated backrest.
