The design aimed to create a memorial bench for Sir Ian Athfield. Taking inspiration from Sir Ian Athfield home and offices during the site visit, I chose to extract different elements that he used throughout his work and simplified them to fit the brief. Circular design was a main component of the brief so by simplifying the elements and considering materiality, the construction / deconstruction of the bench was forefront to symbolise his work, with considerations of environmental impacts and circular economy design principles. By using singular materials with no glue, the design of the bench is very simple and can be easily separated into each material.

With the section of the site being one of the main features of the bench, concrete will be used to fill in the top of the Macrocarpa seating surface. It is an abstracted view that incorporates his work into the bench design whilst the rest of the design takes a simpler approach through careful choice of materials and geometries. The bench will be situated in the corner of the site by a sheltered retaining wall so that users can sit on the bench and look out over the valley below.
