This is a 4th-year project so varies from other students. It focuses on the relationship between furniture and architecture, rather than just thinking of furniture as an element added after architectural design. There are lots of furniture in our building, which sometimes affects the utilization rate of the building space, and sometimes inhibits movement around a space. The research explored four methods of combining architecture and furniture, including structural thinking, multi-use elements, subtraction in design and new organization. The project will carry out a detailed design for the last direction.
The domino system-frame structure is used in most modern apartment buildings, the rooms are simply divided, and people need a lot of furniture after the construction of the buildings. A new system which is called “the stage” in the research, integrates all tables and the bed into a box, it is inserted in the structure between the upper and lower households, the top of the box is used for the table, and the inside is used for the bed. This is not only convenient for users but also defines the public and private spaces.
The project expresses the difference between the inside and outside of the box. People can do lots of activities in the hall of the home, but in the box, it is just a bed. The body of the box uses a timber structure. At the top of the box, there are two layers of coverage, the boundary of the foundation layer is higher and the middle part sinks. This makes it easier to replace the top layer if the users want to change the material or the desktop is damaged, increasing the lifespan of the product.
